Old Tyrants Don’t Fade Away, But They Eventually Die: The Case of North Korea

Developing effective policies to deal with entrenched dictators around the world is not easy.  However, a dictator’s death gives us a chance to take our policy off cruise control.  We should do that by being realistic about the incoming leader, refocusing on our long-term goals, exploiting opportunities to hasten the ultimate outcome, planning for the regime’s fall, and ensuring that the regime can’t hold our policies hostage.

Notes from Norm January 16th 2012: What Are You Doing For Others

In Martin Luther King, Jr., America had its national conscience.  A voice for the poor, the oppressed, the repressed, the disadvantaged, the discriminated and the hopeless.

Throughout my lifetime, as a younger man, and now, as the father of two children who are about the same age as I was during the time that King walked the Earth, I still find his wisdom as enduring today, as I did then.

Notes From Norm Friday December 30th: The Top Ten Stories of 2011

Notes from Norm Friday October 14th: Iran Threat to the World

| Foreign Policy | Norm Coleman

There is no denying that Iran is a country full of bad actors. The leadership of the nation is filled with petty tyrants, ruthless dictators and clerics who use their religion to mask the brutality of the regime.

What the Iranian government does within its country is of concern to anyone in the world who cherishes liberty and human freedom. The fact is, its government oppresses its people with fear and worse underscores that it is a regime without legitimacy.

Response to President Obama's June 29 Press Conference

Obama Ducks War Powers Act. President Obama refused to comment on the constitutionality of War Powers Resolution, and declined to speak to the Administration’s failure to consult with Congress on Libya. Instead, he recycled comments about the limited scope of the operation, the lack of American boots on the ground, and the absence of any U.S. casualties.  Of course the War Powers Resolution references none of these conditions.

Half-Measures in Afghanistan

| Foreign Policy | Lorianne Woodro...

Ill at ease in his Commander-in-Chief role, President Obama walks an uncomfortable line, trying both to appease his liberal base and to flex just enough muscle to appear strong on national security. The result has been long periods of hand-wringing followed by awkward, constrained interventions with arbitrary limitations that make victory far from certain. Just look at Libya. And far from shaping public opinion on these matters, Obama seems a victim of it.

As congressional gridlock continues, there is a lot more at stake than payroll taxes, unemployment benefits, doctors' payments, improving job growth and a better budget outlook. Too often good policy gets forgotten amid financial decisions. Unfortunately, spectrum auctions are treated as merely a budgetary means to pay for other programs.
