Mike Shields

Mike Shields serves as President of the American Action Network, bringing with him nearly two decades of policy and political experience.

Prior to joining AAN in February 2015, Shields was Chief of Staff of the Republican National Committee (RNC) for two years.  In this role, he oversaw the RNC’s transformation following the Growth and Opportunity Report. Following a philosophy of “core competencies,” Shields led the effort to have the RNC focus on being the premier conservative home for Data, Technology and grassroots campaigning.

Shields served as Political Director at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in the 2012 cycle, and in various capacities at the NRCC previously, including director of the committee’s Independent Expenditure unit during the historic 63-seat gain in the House of Representatives in 2010.

Shields has a long track record of policy accomplishments, having served as Chief of Staff to Congressman Dave Reichert (R-WA) from 2005 to 2008, at the U.S. Department of Labor under the Bush Administration, and in the late 1990s, as Communications Director for then House Speaker Newt Gingrich. When Gingrich left office in 1998, Shields joined Gingrich in the private sector, helping him set up Gingrich Communications.

Shields studied Government and Politics at George Mason University.  Born in the United States on a U.S. Air Force Base, Shields moved with this family to Great Britain in 1978 where he lived for 10 years.
